To Read and To Write: Remixing Our Way Into Openness

New media and new media technologies are changing our world significantly. More and more people are taking an active role in consumption and entertainment. As a result, citizens are changing the nature of media itself. While television, Hollywood films and record labels once determined what became popular in culture, an average person at home can now have a similar impact by becoming an internet sensation on Youtube. Jenna Mourey, better known as Jenna Marbles, became an internet celebrity by just presenting her personality in a slight hyperbolic fashion on her Youtube channel (Marbles, 2012). Fan fiction, Youtube videos and internet memes have brought forth a remix culture that is demanding us to re-evaluate how we think about ownership.
Larry Lessig believes this “read-write” culture is becoming a new vehicle for creativity and expression for new generations. Further, he believes remixing is “democratizing” our society, granting us a new way to access, understand, and produce culture (Lessig, 2007). As society evolves and the line between consumers and producers becomes more blurry, it is important to reconsider the laws and policies that shape our world. The nonprofit organization Creative Commons implements intellectual openness by enabling “the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools” (Creative Commons, n.d.). A variety of software, websites and organizations are moving toward open source communities in attempt to keep up with our increasingly open, “sharable” lifestyles. It will be interesting to witness how the law evolves as privacy takes a backseat to creativity.
